A/N: I've had an idea in my head for a while about Hana and Riley's friendship and what happened when Riley found out she was pregnant. The @choicesficwriterscreations event You Go Girls gave me the little push I needed to write about it.

This takes place prior to the second posted chapter: Irreparable Choices

Hana walked into her dorm room to find her roommate and best friend in tears. Soft sobs filtered across the room as she entered the darkened room.

“Riley?” she called out in concern as she flicked the light on, “Riley? What’s wrong?”

Riley lay across her bed, sobbing into her pillow. She sat up and tried to talk, but when she opened her mouth, more sobs came out. She threw herself back down onto the bed.

Her feet thudded across the floor as she closed the distance quickly, sitting on the edge of Riley’s bed and placing a hand on her back, “What happened? Was it Chase? That asshole, I’ll fucking kill him!”

Riley sat up, shaking her head, “N-not Chase….” She threw herself into Hana’s arms, “I think I’m pregnant!”

“Oh, honey!” Hana held her while she cried, patting her hair and murmuring words of comfort to her, “You don’t know for sure? Do I need to run out and pick up a test?”

Riley drew away, wiping at her eyes and sucking in several gulping breaths as she got herself under control, “I’m late. I’m never late!”

“Okay, but you could be this time. You’re on the pill, right?”

Riley nodded, “But it’s not one hundred percent effective!”

“I know, but let’s take it one step at a time. I’ll go get the test. I thought you hadn’t slept with Chase yet?”

They told each other everything. If Riley had fallen into bed with the dreamy TA from their English Lit class that had been pursuing her, she would have told her.

“I haven’t. The last person I had sex with was Drake.”

“The guy back home, right? The neighbor? Not the ex-boyfriend?”

“Right. The ex-boyfriend is Liam. I saw Drake over Christmas break…kind of a lot….”

“Okay, it’s okay, we will figure this out, together, just like we’ve done since Freshman year!”

They had met at Freshman Orientation and had quickly become inseparable. They had requested to room together for their sophomore year.

“I can’t be pregnant, Hana, I can’t! My mother will fucking kill me!”

“One step at a time, remember? Are you going to be okay for about fifteen minutes? I can run over to the student union and get one, they have them in the same vending machine with the condoms.”

Riley nodded and sniffled, “I’ll be fine. Hurry.”

Twenty minutes later they sat looking at each other while they waited for the results.

“So, if you are pregnant…are you sure it’s Drake’s?” Hana asked.

“Positive!” Riley started ticking days off on her fingers, “I started my period the week after finals, then I went home for the break. I didn’t sleep with anyone but Drake while I was there, and I haven’t been with anyone since I got back.”

“Well, that narrows it down,” Hana checked her watch, “Time is up.”

Riley shook her head as she moved away from the bathroom door, “I can’t! You go check it and tell me!”

Hana went into the bathroom and emerged holding the stick out toward her, “I’m so sorry, it’s positive.”

“No!” Riley snatched it from her best friend’s hands and stared down at the two pink lines, “This can’t be happening!”

“Hey, it’s going to be okay,” Hana wrapped her arms around her and let her cry.

Just like Riley had done when Hana’s girlfriend had dumped her, via text no less, at the end of Freshman year.

Riley had been there for her when she had come out to her parents as bisexual, she’d been there for her when she’d gotten her first girlfriend and when she’d lost her.

Hana was determined to return the favor, “Listen. Whatever happens, I’m going to be right by your side, okay?”

“I know,” Riley sniffled as she pulled away, “and I love you for it. You’re my sister in every way that counts!”

“Do you know what you want to do yet?” Hana asked gently, “Or do you need a few days to think about it?”

“I…need to be sure first…” Riley looked at her helplessly, “Could you go get another test?”

“Way ahead of you,” Hana grinned as she reached into her purse and pulled out five more tests, “One tonight and take another in the morning?”

Twenty-four hours and five more positive tests later, Riley knew what she had to do, “I have to tell Drake.”

“You don’t, actually,” Hana told her, “It’s your body, your choice. He doesn’t ever have to know unless you want him to.”

“That feels wrong,” Riley said as her fingers pulled at the tufted white cream bedspread, “if it was just some guy from a random weekend hookup, then I would agree. But it’s Drake. I have to tell him.”

“Do you want to call him now?”

“No,” she shook her head, “I think….I think I need to do this in person.”

“Okay,” Hana stood from the edge of the bed where she’d been sitting, “I’ll help you pack. Does your car have gas? Do you need money for food on the way?”

“You sound like my mother!” Riley laughed for the first time in two days.

“I know you forget to eat sometimes, Ri,” Hana clucked at her, “You know, I’m pretty certain that making sure you have money for food when you drive cross country to tell your long-time neighbor and friend who was never quiet a boyfriend but is obviously more than just a friend that he got you pregnant is in the best friend contract!”

Riley laughed again, “Is it?”

“Yep,” Hana affirmed, “Section twelve, paragraph forty-six.”

The existence of a best friend contract was a running joke between them. One of the many inside jokes and you had to be there moments that comprised their friendship.  

“All right,” Riley gave her a grateful smile, “I’ll let you fuss over me this time.”

“Damn straight you will!” Hana grabbed Riley’s purse to see if she had any cash in it. “You pack a couple changes of clothes; I’ll do this then I’ll pack you some snacks to take.”

“Hana….thank you…” Riley’s eyes were filling with tears again, but this time they were tears of gratitude.

“Hey, no crying!” Hana pulled her into a hug, “I love you, okay?”

“I love you too,” Riley hugged her back, “you’re the best friend that ever existed in the whole history of the world!”

“Well, that’s not possible,” Hana said as she squeezed her tighter, “because that’s you!”

Riley pressed her face into Hana’s shoulder, as a half sob, half laugh escaped her. She didn’t know what she had done to deserve such an unconditional and healing friendship, but she knew that she was eternally grateful for it.

Albedo bows hurriedly when you swing the heavy wooden door open, and you wave a dismissive hand; you’d told him to stop bowing to you years ago, and he still couldn’t cut the habit. Archons know it’ll be longer before he can stop calling you by a royal title.

“I had some trouble sleeping. I hope you don’t mind if I accompany you for a bit, Albedo.”

He shakes his head, gesturing to the spread of notebooks, test tubes, and various gadgets on the table, as if any of it would mean something to you. “I was just doing a bit of light experimentation. Nothing dangerous, so you’re welcome to stay.”

You pull up a stool at his side, one that he’d placed there specifically for your presence—it’s rare that anyone else visits him down here, after all. Since you were a child, you’d always had a fascination with this room, the royal lab, and it happened to be the place Albedo usually inhabited as the former royal alchemist’s pupil. You’d become fast friends.

The silence is comfortable for a few minutes. Albedo tinkers with a few things, takes some notes, and you simply watch. Crickets chirp outside the darkened windows. It’s how it’s always been.

Your eyes fall on a small burn mark on the wall that’s clumsily covered in paint. “Do you remember when we made that?” you ask, pointing out the blemish. Albedo looks up in surprise; you’re usually not one to converse when you keep him company. “I thought mixing a few chemicals couldn’t go too wrong. That was quite a mess to clean up.”

It was a common pattern when you were younger—you would make the mess, and Albedo would fix it. He was always smarter and a bit more mature than you, and as you grew up together, it remained that way.

“You were quite the troublemaker,” he says, a nostalgic smile tugging at his lips, “I was shocked that someone so hot-headed could ever hope to lead the kingdom.”

“What do you think of me, Albedo?”

It’s so abrupt that the question catches him off guard, hand slipping and drawing an ugly line through his notes. He struggles to control his breath. What does he think of you? It’s surely not his place to tell the truth in that regard; he’s lucky your parents had even allowed the two of you to be friends, much less what he actually wants. He gulps down the lump in his throat, trying to appear unfazed.

“If you’re asking me as a royal, then I would say that it’s been an honor to serve as an alchemist under your name. I look forward to doing more work to advance this kingdom, and I know you have a bright future as our ruler.”

A completely textbook answer.

He looks away too fast to be natural, hands already busying themselves with something else to prevent himself from saying too much. It seems you’ve hit a nerve, but that was also your intention all along.

Rising from your seat, you approach his side hesitantly, sliding your fingers over the pile of notebooks on the table—endless knowledge, most of which you likely wouldn’t understand. Albedo has always been a culmination of things you don’t understand, but you want to.

The truth is, you can’t imagine yourself loving anyone except him.

“And if I wasn’t asking as a royal?” He flinches, clearly not expecting you to continue this line of questioning. “If I asked you as me and me alone, how would you answer?”

Albedo turns to you, then, eyes dimming in the low light of the lab. He looks vulnerable, though he fights to keep his expression even. His voice is barely audible, a breathless whisper for your ears alone.

“If you were asking me as you and you alone,” he repeats, inhaling deeply for courage, “I’d say I’ve learned that sometimes, the discovery only leads to more questions.”

His gaze flickers down to your lips for a moment, then shoots back up to your eyes. The room suddenly feels much warmer than before. “And there are many more things I’d like to find out about you, if you’d allow me.”

You don’t know how you ended up this way. Well, you do, but you aren’t sure why it ended up this way.

College parties, as far as you’re aware, are supposed to be red solo cups and loud music, waking up the next day with hangovers and 8am classes. They’d been right about the red solo cups, but having one in Xiangling’s hands meant trouble.

“Let’s play Seven Minutes in Heaven,” she had slurred, a lazy smile on her lips as she stumbled around the room. You groaned as you caught her by the arm, just before she crashed into the vase in the corner.

“Xiangling, we’re in college, not high school. And I don’t think you’re in any condition to be doing anything except sleeping.”

Of course, there was no saying no to Xiangling about anything, which is how you ended up stuffed in a closet with Xiao.

It’s painfully awkward at first, dead silence with your limbs tangled together in the small space. He doesn’t say anything, and neither do you, out of fear of saying something stupid.

The truth is, you’ve had a crush on Xiao for a very long time now. It had started when he tutored you in your freshman year chemistry class, and since you had a mutual friend group, you began to see him a lot more often. He was kinder than he let on, albeit a bit rough around the edges, but you liked that about him—at least, you thought you did.

Sometime a few months ago, something had changed. He stopped entertaining your conversations, stopped answering your texts, just stopped. You’d been struggling to move on since then, since it was painfully obvious that your feelings were not returned.

“Are you drunk?” you ask shyly, just trying to fill the silence. He chuckles humorlessly.

“Not even a little. I wish I was, maybe I could get the image of Zhongli dancing out of my head.”

You laugh in response, slowly tapering off when he says nothing. It makes you feel a bit guilty that he got stuck in here with you.

“Xiao, listen, I’m sorry that it was my name you picked,” you say, leaning forward a bit, “I just—”

“Just don’t move,” he hisses through his teeth, jaw grinding with impatience. You frown in the darkness.

“Listen, if you didn’t want to do this, you didn’t have to play the stupid game. I think we’re all old enough that we can speak for ourselves—”

“That’s not it.”

“Wow, it’d be really cool if you’d let me finish my sente—”

“I just didn’t want you doing this with anyone else. I think I’d rather die than see someone like Childe disappear into this stupid closet with you.”

“I just think it’s a little ru—wait, what?”

Xiao sighs, seemingly a bit frustrated with himself. He understands that you’re unhappy with him, but he can’t find the words to say. Coming to terms with his feelings for you had been difficult, and since then, he’s been avoiding admitting to them. After all, what could someone like you see in someone like him?

“I’m sorry,” he says to start. That’s the one thing he’s sure about. “I know I’ve been rude lately. That’s my fault.”

“Well, yeah,” you grumble, and he fights the urge to roll his eyes, but continues anyway.

“I know everything I’ve done says otherwise, but…I like you. I have for a while, maybe since I met you.” He grits his teeth, feeling totally uncomfortable and out of his element. Some things are necessary though, he reasons, and you’re definitely worth it. “So I’m sorry for being an ass. Please don’t hate me. If you hate me, then just tell me, because then I’ll—”

The sound of Xiangling’s voice echoes from outside. “Ten seconds left, lovebirds!”

Xiao sighs. He’s out of time.

There’s a lot of things he could say, should say, but he settles for this: 

“If you hate me, then just tell me,” he repeats, searching for your eyes in the darkness. He finds them for a moment, wide and soft. “Because then I’ll do everything I can to make it up to you.”

The door swings open.

Thoma takes a deep breath as he waits on the busy street, the townspeople chattering in excitement about the upcoming festival. The Commission had done endless work to organize this, he knows, and that should be an object of his anxiety as well, but all he can think about is you.

Being a fixer, he’s never been a stranger to social interaction. He probably speaks to hundreds of people, and it’s all in a day’s work. Of course, hundreds of people don’t make his heart race and palms sweat whenever he sees them, that’s a feature unique only to you.

Even asking you to accompany him to the festival had been quite an ordeal. Ayaka commented that she had never seen him so shaken in her life, and she was probably right; he’d rehearsed the conversation by himself for days. You’d accepted without complaint, kind as you are, but now comes the real issue: actually going to the festival with you.

Still, you look so excited when you wave to him from the end of the street that he can’t help but smile as well. His nervousness dissipates as soon as you’re right in front of him—you’re too bright to focus on anything else.

“Where to first? I hope you have a good tour for me,” you say teasingly, taking him by the arm. He chuckles.

“Don’t worry, I know all the best places.”

The two of you enjoy the festival together. A few people stop Thoma for a short conversation, a knowing twinkle in their eyes when they see you by his side. It’s no secret that he’s quite fond of you, though you don’t seem to notice. He’s okay with that for now; it’d been hard enough to ask you here, much less to ask you to be his.

As you pass the merchant booths, a bracelet of Sango Pearls catches your eye, and Thoma doesn’t hesitate to purchase it for you. You thank him endlessly, sliding it over your wrist, but his face morphs into confusion when you ask the merchant for another one. He knows fashion quite well, and he’s aware that stacking bracelets is indeed a thing, but wouldn’t it do you better to stack different—

His breath hitches when you grasp his hand, soft skin sliding against his, the newly purchased bracelet settling against his wrist.

“Beautiful,” you remark, smiling softly, pearls reflecting in your eyes. His heart jumps, but he masks it with a chuckle, scratching the back of his neck.

“We should go,” he says, trying to draw attention away from the blush on his cheeks. “I know a good spot to watch the fireworks show.”

It’s the perfect end to the night. Naganohara Fireworks never fails to impress; Thoma makes a mental note to thank Yoimiya later. You seem to enjoy it too, lips parted slightly in awe, hands clutched tightly to your chest. The fireworks are as stunning as they are loud; pops and crackles of light boom across the night sky, a wonder for your eyes to witness.

Thoma thinks the Shogun might be right about eternity; he wishes this moment would never end.

“You’re beautiful, too,” he whispers.

“Where did you park?” Drake asked as they made their way into the parking lot.

“This way,” she pointed and tried to change direction.

“No,” he guided her back the other way, “We’re going to my truck first, then you’re going to wait in it while it warms up and I’ll go move your car.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s cold out here,” he told her as he unlocked the passenger side door of his beat-up Ford Ranger and opened it for her.

He climbed into the driver’s seat and started the engine. After ensuring the heater was on and turned up, he held out his hand, “Give me your keys. Do you need anything out of it?”

“Yes, please,” she fished the keys out of her purse and handed them to him, “If you could grab the duffle bag out of the backseat, that would be great.”

“Okay, cool. Be right back!”

She watched as he jumped out of the cab of the truck and jogged across the lot to her little blue Chevy Cavalier, her mind spinning with the day’s revelations.

Drake wanted a relationship with her? A real one?

That was news to her.

She wasn’t sure how she felt about it.

If it were their sophomore year of high school, her fifteen-year-old self would be over the moon, but after a year of unrequited pining on her part, she had moved on.

By the time Drake and Kiara had broken up, she had been with Liam. His best friend.

And she had been in love with Liam, she had lost her virginity to him, and she was still struggling with her residual feelings for him.

But she’d be lying if she said she didn’t harbor some sort of feelings for Drake too.

Always had.

She didn’t have the emotional bandwidth to deal with it at the moment though.

Whatever was between them had to stay in the realm of future possibility for the time being. She had more pressing things going on.

But she couldn’t deny the tug on her heart as she watched him walk back to the truck.

He tossed her bag in the bed before climbing in the cab and handing her back her keys, “Do you mind if we stop at my place first? I need a shower, and we can drop your bag off so it’s not sitting in the cold while we eat.”

“Sounds good,” she answered, “just pull around on the side you can’t see from my house.”

“Of course,” he grinned at her as he threw the truck into gear and pulled out of the parking spot, “who do you think you’re dealing with here? I’m the world champ at sneaking in and out of houses!”

It was true, throughout their entire high school career, Drake had never been caught by his parents or the parents of the girls whose windows he climbed in and out of.

“Oh, I remember,” she rolled her eyes, “It’s part of why everyone called you Drake the snake, your ability to slither in and out of places undetected by parents.”

“Part of it?” He sounded surprised, “What was the other part?”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah, seriously!”

Her mouth fell open, “You really don’t know?”

“Know what? Just tell me!”

She scoffed loudly, “You were a known fuckboy, Drake.”

He cut his eyes sidewise at her, “I’m not a fuckboy, Riley.”

“Yes, you are!”

“Do you even know that term means?”

“It means a promiscuous guy.”

“No, if that were all it meant, I’d own that. It means a guy that doesn’t respect women and lies and misleads them for sex. I’ve never done that to anyone. If I want casual, I’m upfront about it.”

“How do you know all that?”

“I looked it up after you called me that the night of junior prom,” he said tightly.

Riley jolted in surprise, “Why?”

He shrugged, “I wanted to know what it meant.”

It had hurt his feelings.

“I don’t know. I think most people just use it to mean promiscuous. You’ve dated a lot of girls, Drake…. a lot!”

He had, in fact, worked his way through half of the girls in their graduating class as well as the one above and below them.

“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean-“

“You went through them pretty fast, too.”

“I dated Kiara for a year and a half!” he protested.

“More like a year and two months,” she corrected him.

A gloating smile spread across his face, “You were paying attention to the length of my relationships?”

She ignored his obvious pleasure at the revelation as she rolled her eyes, “Relationships? Plural? Other than Kiara, you just had flings and hookups.”

“You know she broke up with me because of you, right?”

“No! What? Why? What did I do?”

“It was nothing you did,” he assured her, “it was me.”

“I don’t understand…”

“Remember the night that shit happened with Tariq?”

She shuddered at the memory as she wrapped her arms around herself, “How could I forget?”

He hadn’t wanted to take no for an answer. He had gotten handsy and pushy.

After slapping the dog shit out of him, and kneeing him in the balls, she’d called Drake to pick her up from the party she’d been attending.

“Yeah, well, we were about to walk into a formal dinner for her grandparent’s fiftieth wedding anniversary. She was not happy that I bailed on her.”

Riley’s eyes went wide, “Holy shit! I’m so sorry, I had no idea!”

“How could you have?” He shrugged as he slid a quick glance at her before returning his attention to the road, “Like I said, it wasn’t your fault, it was mine.”

“That’s why you were wearing a suit that night!” she laughed, then confusion washed over her, “But why was she mad? I mean, I get that it was a big night, but surely she could understand that it was an emergency.”

“She did understand that, Riley, but she said you could have called someone else, like a parent, or your brother, or your best friend.”

Shock coursed through her, “I…guess I could have….”

It had never occurred to her to call anyone else.

“It’s okay, I’m glad you called me.”

“Tariq wasn’t.”

Drake had taken her home that night, but after hearing the full story of what had transpired, had gone back and beaten the crap out of him.

“Yeah, well, he fucking deserved it!” Drake shifted gears as he braked at a four-way stop.

“I’m not arguing that point. You’re just lucky he didn’t press charges.”

“I know that wasn’t luck, Riley,” he said softly, shooting her a meaningful look before pulling through the intersection and taking a right hand turn.

Riley had threatened to press charges of her own, and an agreement to drop the whole thing on both sides had been reached.

But she had told every girl in school not to trust him.

“I still can’t believe she broke up with you just for that!”

Drake didn’t bother to tell her that it wasn’t just that. The night with Tariq had merely been the straw that had broken the proverbial camel’s back.

Every time Riley had needed him, he had gone. If there was a conflict between being there for her, or for his girlfriend, he had always chosen her.

It was why he stopped trying to have relationships after that.

What he said out loud was, “Yeah, well, we weren’t that compatible anyway.”

“Wait…I don’t remember ya’ll breaking up then, it was like two weeks later or something.”

“She took her time doing it, but when she dumped me, her chief complaint was that I never put her first. Apparently, her grandparents asked where I was that night and she was embarrassed.”

Kiara had waited two weeks after the night in question to break up with him.

One week after that night, Riley had started dating Liam.

He’d wondered a million times what would have happened if Kiara had dumped him that night.

Maybe he would have had a chance with Riley then, but once she’d started dating Liam that had been that.

“She wasn’t good enough for you anyway,” Riley told him.

He laughed, “You say that about everyone.”

“Well, it’s true! And you must know it because you never even tried to get serious with any of them. Other than her.”

“Yeah, well-“

“That’s why I said you were a fuckboy! Because you went through so many girls!”

She had hated the girl he’d taken to junior prom. Or, more to the point, she’d hated the way the girl had hung all over him. Like she owned him or something.

“There’s a reason for that-“

“Other than you being a fuckboy?”

“Yes…”

“Okay, what was the reason?”

“None of them were you,” he said softly as he pulled into his driveway.

“What?” The bottom fell out of her stomach.

He pulled onto the hard-packed dirt next to the house, threw the truck in park, and turned to face her, “Kiara wasn’t wrong. I didn’t put her first.”

“No, that’s not true, you did-“

He ran a hand down the side of her face as his eyes searched hers, “No, I didn’t. I put you first, every time, and I always will. It makes me a bad boyfriend for anyone else and I don’t hurt people on purpose.”

“Drake…”

He dropped his hand from her face and looked away, “I’m not a fuckboy, Riley.”

“Okay,” she nodded, at a complete loss for anything coherent to say.

He glanced at her then away again, hands fidgeting with the steering wheel as he asked, “Is that why you don’t take me seriously?”

“I take you seriously!” she protested.

“As a friend, yes, that’s not in question. But you don’t look at me the way you look at Liam, do you? Like someone you could have a future with?”

“I….I never thought of you that way because I didn’t think you thought of me that way!” she struggled to keep her tears at bay.

He nodded as he turned off the truck, “Well I do. I know this isn’t the time for it. I don’t want to add any pressure or stress to your life, but…think about it, okay?”

“About what…exactly?”

“A future, with me. I know you have stuff you still want to do out there,” he gestured toward the whole world, “but I’ll be right here, Riley, waiting.”

She opened her mouth to reply, but nothing came out.

“It’s okay,” he told her, “You don’t have to say anything right now. I just wanted you to know how I feel. Come on, let’s get inside while there’s no one around to see you here.”

He hopped out of the cab and grabbed her bag from the back.

She followed him quickly through the door that went directly to his bedroom.

Relief rushed into her when he closed the door to the attached bathroom and started the shower.
